Simvastatin 20mg I have been taking this medicine ...

Simvastatin 20mg I have been taking this medicine for over a year now and have complained of pains in legs and hands. Also have been nausea and some times light headed. Have told the doctors about this but they say nothing. My trig,s are 185 and everything else good. I am thinking of stoping this medicine now and just do more exercise. I am a dairy eater only so what else can I eat to keep it down. Any information you cn give me would sure help. Right now I am feeling nausea and lack of appetite.  thanks   edith smith

Embarassed Dear Edith, I been taken statins for many many years without any side effects, however this is not your case, this medication works in the liver reducing the production of lipids,(colesterol, etc.), your lipid panel seen to be at acceptables levels, however you may want to cut your dose to half a pill, 10 mg. once a day, this will probably reduced the side effects, there are many others statin on the market but I presume that since they all work under the same principle, is not going to change the effects, try taken only half of the pill, you can buy a pill cutter at any Walgreens, or any mayor drug store, make sure your Phisician knows of this change, I hope you can benefit from my adviced.           Antonio

The pain in your hands and legs could be significant. I would as the doctor for a blood test to check your kidney function. Sooner than later.

You have the right to what you do with your body. If you want to stop taking this med it is your choice and clearly your doctor is not answering your questions (don't you hate that? I do) anyway, someone I know took a swig of grapeseed oil each morning right from the bottle for a month. So he said...went back to get rechecked and was normal. Eating oatmeal daily is also supposed to help.

Hello

I took this medicine for a short period of time and it had a similiar effect. I would push your doctor to try other medication.

The muscle pain that this medication causes is due to elevated liver enzymes, and that can be a serious side effect which is the reason on the lable to notify your physician.  Since your liver enzymes on your blood work is good you said, that's probably why your physician isn't too concerned about the medication being the cause of your pain.  However, you may need to see a neurologist for other possible causes like neuropathy and such.

I am also experiencing problems with s.  Legs hurting and now swelling very badly.  My dr took me off the pills, told me to (get this!) drink more water..no, not cokes, not tea, not coffee but pure 8 oz water at least 4 times a day.  I removed excess water and pain begain to lessen.  Who knew adding water would help rid body of excess water?  Dr says body thought it was drying up so it began to "hoard" water.  Sounds like a weird answer, but it's true.
