Kids will play with anything which attracts them, especially if it has buttons to push and it lights up and/or makes sounds.
That being said, it is far better to give your child toys which require them to use their imaginations and their developing physical skills.
Leapfrog and other toys of that ilk are marketed to parents, especially parents who feel guilty about the little time they have to spend with their children.
Avoid electronic 'learning' toys and give your child something else. When the toy does less, the child does more.
