Inoperative Cooling

Cooling side of pump stopped working abruptly. What might be the cause? Blower ok. Power to unit ok. There is no blockage of coil or other blockage visible.

Thanks for your help.

John

I'm not an A/C expert, but I wonder if you had a leak. How old is the unit?

first is to check power on outdoor unit, there are separate breakers for this. a leak is another possible problem, some of these units won't operate with too little charge in them. there is also a capacitor in the outdoor unit that might have burned out, this will stop the outdoor unit from running. so will a bad thermostat. does the indoor fan run? that will tell you if the control circuit (24volt) is ok. that not working might be a transformer, if there is power to the indoor unit. hope this helps. if you need more info let me know.

Joe thanks for your help! I've checked the following and all are ok: separate breakers, thermostat, indoor fan, all works. However, the fan on the outdoor unit is inoperative. It behaves as if it is frozen in place so to speak...stopped running abruptly.

I am not sure about the capacitor...can you determine if bad by observation? Does repair call for professional technician? How do you know if Heat Pump needs charging? By the hear side of this unit works well.

Joe, I meant to say "by the way the heat side of the unit works"

there is a disconnect near the unit make sure you pull it out or turn it off before you open the access panel. then check the fan blade does it spin freely? visually you can tell if the capacitor is bad if the case is swollen at either end or has oil leaking. it is just like a can of tomato paste or oval, but aluminum, unless the unit is very old, with 2 or 3 terminals on it. that depends on the unit. you will find it in the outdoor unit.
