Can an IUI take longer than 14 days to be positive?

I had the IUI procedure 7 days ago-and my doc told me to test 14 days after the procedure-however, looking at my cycle..I shouldn't have my period until about 5 days after the 14 days is up...should I test or just wait? I went through this a couple of months ago too and didn't wait - ended up testing the fourteen days after and then the next 4 days until my period came...if its negative after 14 days of having the IUI does that mean it didn't work? Sorry to ramble...
