Help with bad past experience at work.

I have bi-polar 2 Affective Disorder. I worked in a lab happily for six years. Then five years ago my manager left and the person under her(and over me) took over. She said I was uncivilized because I didn't come in with a big good morning too everyone, everyday,(although most days I was more cheerful and supprtive than most of the staff) and that I was useing my disorder as an excuse and even said that she didn't believe that I was bi-polar. She would wear purfume which gave me severe headaches-she said it was her right to wear purfume(my old boss baned purfume because of allergies). She harrased me so much that I became severely depressed and went on disability for a month. When I came back the harrasment was even worse speaking to 3 different people who constantly drilled me with questions. I quit the next day because I just couldn't handle it. Since then I returned to my home province and started my own business but not to the extent where I can support myself. It's not that the business isn't viable, I just don't trust anyone enough to carry and sell my wares. How do I get rid of this feeling that someone can come into my life and straight faced- calm as day- desrtoy everything I've built up. I need to get on my horse to build the best part of my life but I'm afraid of falling into that kind of depression again.

First, if you have bipolar 2, you are hopefully familiar with up and downs in mood. It is very hard to fight these up and downs without medication. Normally this is medicated by Lamotrigine(Lamictal) or similar - Hope you are informed about that possibility. Talk to your doctor about this possible medication.

From your words I can not see any reason for you to be harassed. Your action seems to me to be well funded on good reasoning. It is of coarse not your manager that can set your diagnose - but your a professional (doctor/psychiatrist). Forget that manager, she will never make it anyway.

I do not know what business you are doing, but people with your former managers attitude are rare, and you should not have to be to worry about that. Please take care and don't worry about the future. You said it " the best of me" - let that come forward and then you can face every problem. You have obviously a good attitude that can help both you and your associates to make a honest and good business.

Thanks Saiph. I was analyzed 7 years ago and I'm pretty even keel with my moods now. I definately have high ideals when it comes to business and I can have an honest and good business. I'm an artist and my medium is jewellery. I think I am going to have to force myself to take the chance and trust other people. Most of the people I worked with and the previous manager was very understanding and that bad apple really shouldn't ruin me. Especially since I'm not part of the bunch anymore. I have to be tough I guess.

Hi Mick,

Yes, in a way, you do have to be tough.  Ghandi said, "No one can hurt me without my permission" and I think he was right on.  This is not to say that it is okay for people to act that way.  As we all know from our life experiences though, people will act in problematic ways.  Our job is to see that we do not allow them to "zap" our power with their silliness.

You have work to do in this world.  Lift yourself up to the level where your inner strength means everything to you and do not let it be touched by others.
