Help with OIl Burning/Smoking issue

My 1999 volkswagen seems to be burning oil,recently took a long trip and added oil,as soon as I was back on the road, there were billows of smoke for several minutes and then stopped,later on I added more oil and the same thing happened. What are the possible causes and corrections?

From the description you give i'd say the engines pistons need re-ringed. Longer you run it with bad piston rings worse problems are likely to arise. Valve stem seats are also know to wear out and cause smoke . If you pull one of your spark plugs and it has alot of oil and soot to it. It's definetly one of the two.Other causes could be a blown head gasket,cracked head,or a bad egr valve on an automatic transmission.Bad EGR valve signs are smoke from the pipe on a warm morning.It's actually sucking the transmission fluid into the engine.Until the transmission warms enough to seal off.
