As a child growing up in Iberville Parish my mother who grew up at Bayou Chene told me about cajun/creole (voodoo?) customs of demons who steal souls of (recently?) deceased on Halloween night. She told me that people cleaned and painted the graves during the day, then sat up all night to guard the graves from evil spirits. She was born in 1921 and grandparents were from the St. Martinsville and Bayou Chene/Sorrel areas.
