Hello everyone. I know we all have our own ...

Hello everyone.  I know we all have our own opinions, and I respect them all.  I only ask that each of you also respect my opinion, and read the following with a completely open mind.

The disease and treatment are immaterial to the discussion, and we are not talking about the decision of a boy, but a whole family.

Let's not complicate the issue with personal experiences and questionable details, and look at it as simply as we can...

A family was given medical advice.

The family found the advice unacceptable.

That should be their right.

Those of you who today applaud the violation of this family's decision, just because you do not agree with them should consider this... If the news today announced that the facts of the story were mistaken, and that the family actually wanted chemo, but the judge ruled that the risks were too great, and ordered them that they were not allowed to try it -- then you would immediately start screaming that the courts should not be dictating the choice.

You cannot have it both ways. You cannot say the government is allowed to violate someone's rights only when it goes along with your personal opinion.

The fact is that the decision should be the family's -- not yours, not mine, not the courts.

A loss of rights and freedoms may seem ok to you now, because they side with your opinion. This will not always be the case, so protect the rights, and remind yourself that no one knows everything, and everyone makes mistakes, and leave the personal decisions to the people to decide for themselves.

The boy is not too young to make the decision, but even if he was then the decision belongs with his parents (not the courts), and the parents agree with him.

If one treatment has worked for you, or one treatment has not worked for you, please remember that every treatment (even a treatment of letting nature take its course) has a chance of success, but no treatment has a 100% success rate.  Every course of action has risks, and every person/family should have the right to decide if the risks are acceptable to them.

I want each and every one of you to take a deep breath and put away your anger and prejudices for a moment and simply consider this -- The next time you go to a doctor or dentist, for anything, do you want there to be a chance that you will be branded a criminal for refusing to be forced to go along with something that you (for whatever reason) are strongly against?

That is what this is all about, please do not let this be lost in all the details of all these discussions.

It is your right to have an opinion in what the best course of action is in this case, it is the goverment's right to have an opinion, and it is the family's right to have an opinion.

Try to recall all the advice you have been given by family and friends in your life that you chose not to follow.  They were sure they were right,  you were sure you were right, but you had the right to choose for yourself.

Let's all take steps to ensure that it is always the family's opinion which decides, whether we agree with them or not.  Please.

Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

Since you are talking about a family that lives in my state, I would like to add my opinion to what you said. I think that the family has the right to decide the fate of their child in this case. The boy is too young to make a decision on his own. What bothers me in this particular case and others like this is one thing: I do not want the government to pay 1 penny if the treatment the parents choose does not work and they decide to come back to Minnesota for help. They had the opportunity and they turned it down. All I can say is that I wish the best for the boy and his family.

we can not allow a 13 year old to make this decision, we also can not allow the parents to make it ,if they don't know what is best ! That is why we have doctors in the first place, They are better trained then we are on what is best ...god bless this child. If this child stands  (any) chanch of being saved by medical doctors, then let them give him his chanch at life! Years ago I watched a 5 week old baby (DIE) because the Religion wood not allow the blood of another to be put into this child! We could have SAVED that baby.Instead I last saw it in a styrofoam casket!!!!

Hello! Being a single mom of four daughters, I agree with your statement on who's decision this health matter should be the parents.  And I don't believe the parents are wrong for saying they don't agree with the treatment the judge has ordered.  The judge is not a physician, and even if he was, everyone should be able to get a second, third or forth opionion on their health needs.  I don't feel the mom is wrong for taking her son to recieve the treatment she feel is best for her son.  I believe if these parent refused any treatment for there son, then charges could be brought up for child neg. but for right now they should allow the treatment the parents has chose.  Thank you,

                                           Ms. Lynn in Calif.

The treatment the parents have chosen has not been proven to be effective.  Therefore, the treatment the parents have chosen is DEATH over life.  Would you choose death for your child or any child for that matter?  A decision made with the end result in certain death for any child is wrong no matter how much the custodial person wants to decide the child's fate or no matter what country they reside in or visit to seek treatment for a minor or major illness.  The child it is assummed cannot make a decision that will result in death because he/she does not have the education or capacity to learn with understanding what the consequences will be if the wrong decision is made that has an unsatisfactory result in the eyes of the court whom we have adjudged to be the best person(s) to make such decisions in the event of a disputable medical outcome based on belief of medical personnel and that of the caretakers.  We have given the courts the right to make all decisions disputed by two parties be it medical or other matters.  In addition we have given the courts the right to adjudge individuals who fail to carry out its decisions to be criminals that should be punished in accordance with all laws we previously established as being fair and just.  In short the parents are contributing to the murder of this child and should be charged with murder if this child dies and he surely will without proper treatment.  Remember we are all entitled to our opinion as stated above.
