When Faith Healing Results in Death

I would like to know the general feelings people have about faith healing.

The question is posed after reading an AOL News article entitled “Praying Parents Get Jail for Child’s Death.”

Dale and Leilani Neumann were convicted of second-degree reckless homicide in separate trials in the state of Wisconsin.  They were sentenced to a total of 6 months jail time and 10 years probation, along with other stipulations regarding the health and welfare of the other children remaining in the home.

The youngest daughter died of complications resulting from an undiagnosed condition of treatable diabetes.  The parents were unaware of this condition as they had not sought the advise nor opinion of anyone within the medical profession.

The couple showed little to no remorse for their actions, even in their “after sentencing” statements.

The mother stated… "I do not regret trusting truly in the Lord for my daughter's health," she said… "Did we know she had a fatal illness? No. Did we act to the best of our knowledge? Yes."

The father stated…  "I am guilty of trusting my Lord's wisdom completely. ... Guilty of asking for heavenly intervention. Guilty of following Jesus Christ when the whole world does not understand. Guilty of obeying my God,"

Also, during the sentencing hearing, the mother told the judge her family is loving and forgiving and has wrongly been portrayed as religious zealots.

Believing that God can heal is a basic tenet  of Christianity and other faiths. However, it does not mean abandoning reason and medical help. Remember Jesus said it is the sick that need the physician not the well.

I believe in healing and I believe in Doctors. You can pray and the Doc can be used by God to do his will. I would never say"If you don't do this God then she will die" God gives wisdom to people to heal. The parents could sure use some also.

I think it's a shame that this happens in the world today, although every once in a while, the same situation occurs.  They were waiting for God's intervention--don't they realize that His intervening  might  have  been  by the hands of the doctor who could have saved  their daughter's life?  God uses many means to accomplish his work.  It's terrible that this child had to die.

If you think Obama's system is working, ask someone who isn't!

Allow me to quote the Scriptures: 1 Cor 13:8-10

"Charity never fails.  But where there are prophecies, they shall fail.  Where there are tongues, they shall cease.  Where there is knowledge, it shall vanish.  We know in part, prophesy in part, but when that which is perfect comes, that which is in part shall be taken away."

So with all the gifts: as we have gained the skill to do what God once did, He has put us on our own to do so, as we teach our children to walk by letting them skin their knees.

In a greater sense, it was necessary.  These gifts of God were signs to the early Church to give them faith that they had indeed believed the truth.  Since then, we have come of age.  That does not mean God has lost His power.  Nor does it mean that we believe in vain.

It means that we have taken our first steps.  Now that we can walk, we need not go back to crawling.  Also, when the end of life comes, as it has since Adam, then we must face that with faith and know that we don't need signs and miracles to believe.

You helped your kids with their homework, but you didn't do it for them.

What has transpired, did so because it was God's intent.  We don't all need to endure a century on earth to be redeemed.  When God calls people home, they go to Heaven.

i believe i can fly

i tend to think if there is god, and if he is that wise and mighty, and if humans built in his image, than:

1. he will probably prefare those who will help themselves instead of waiting for him for help every 2 secs.

2. he will asume we are smart enough to think for ourselves.

3. he will be too mighty to bother with every little person who deside to ruin his life.

4. he wont even bother by those who will ask angrily after "why did god agreed to that?" because he is simply too big for that.

5. on the other hand if there is NOgod, than get medication for the needed will be the best thing to do, right? so until there is a cutting prove that he/she/it exist, we better take care of ourselves.

Because the question was more of a survey than a question, I would say that I found what I was looking for.  Thanks to those who took the time to post a comment.

As a Chistian, of course I believe that God heals - but I also believe that physicians are available and that God can work through them. (After all Luke was a physician).I have gone with elders in my church and anointed a sick person with oil and prayed over them.. according to Thy will... A person who is sick should go to a doctor and get diagnosed and if there is treatment go with the treatment - at the same time the person should pray and have others pray for them to recover. All is in God's hands and He will decide if and when and how a person is to be healed.

Trusting above is never wrong. But today we have medicines to cure sickness and it's one thing that He allowed human beings discover. It's His way of curing the sick these days but of course it's much better to accompany it with a prayer. With regards to the faith healer, yes, they could be of help but most of them are afraid to be embarassed by saying "you need to be in the hospital, they can find out what's really wrong with you". Negligence is a great offense especially if it resulted to death. Civil Rights Lawyers can help you with that matters providing with a strong evidence you could have.
