I have a eurasian collared dove nesting in my oak tree. What kind of diet do they need, it only feeds on the ground wild bird food. I have cats and dogs so I worry about its longevity here, should I build a platform? Will it go to it?
THAT WHICH DOESN'T KILL YOU MAKES YOU STRONGER.
Bull. Reality is, it will usually hurt like hell and leave you with a permanent limp.
They will go to a platform feeder; they will try feeding from regular feeders, but they are so clumsy it doesn't usually go well - however, they will manage to spill a bunch and then feed on the ground around it. Even with a fairly large area platform feeder, they still will forage around on the ground, esp. if you have squirrels throwing the feed all over as they search out the best pieces. The doves will do just fine on black sunflower seeds, but they also come to the regular mixed wild bird feed. They tend to invite their buddies, so expect a group before too long.
