Hi Betsy......I was watching a show recently about Elm trees in the US. It was about why we'er losing Elms. There is a prevalent bug from Japan, a beetle,I don't know if it's from Japan, but it's called a Japanese Beeltl. It's killed  millions of elm trees in the States and no cure in sight. Whole forrests in MI. and other states are being wiped out. The problem shows up after about 3 to 4 yrs after planting.

Anything you don't normally do in your work day is "Adult Play" at home...  For me, it's mowing lawn.

Betsy:

I've read CK's answer, but I think your tree is suffering from Dutch Elm Disease.  DED is a fungus infection carried by the larvae of bark beetles, and is nearly always fatal.   Leaves and branches wilt and die from the fungus.  Onset can be in late spring.

For treatment, look in the yellow pages under Arborists.  An arborist can evaluate and treat the tree.  A local nursery or Extension service should also know who to contact in your area.

Treatment may consist of removing diseased limbs, applying insecticide or injecting fungicides.  If the tree is too badly diseased, removal may be the only option.

Thanks for your input. I have decided to call our Parks Dept and have someone look at it.  It is on the city side of the tree-lined street, so it actually belongs to them.  I appreciate your help.  A lot of the leaves have already turned yellow, so I believe that you may be right.

Dear Betsy:

I hope the Parks Dept finds out it's something much less serious.  Good Luck.

[Most of our land is part of a Nature Preserve.  DED kills elms there yearly.]
