Cultivated moss as a green roofing method?

Is letting moss grow on my roof considered "green" roofing? Is there a way to get it to grow evenly and look nice on  apitched roof? In my experience it tends to have an uneven mottled look to it.

The house next to me had a rounded roof on which they had moss growing.  I thought it looked great; however, after a couple of years they removed it all.  Apparently, it drew the mosquitoes, gnats, and other bugs making it impossible for them to sit out in their yard and enjoy it. I don't know if you would have that problem as I don't know what area you are in, but it's worth thinking about.  I hope you can do this without the bug problem as it's really a nice effect.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody.

The previous answer by UR193 brought up some excellent points. If you want to hear from a company that installs roof made of moss, you can contact this company and see what they have to say, keeping in mind the pros and cons. I would be interested in hearing what you decide to do.

Thank you both, I wish moss acres had more photos but it gives me confidence in my ideas. Considering mosquitoes was not something that had occurred to me, so I have some things to think about.

Moss will not be "green roofing". First, it needs a relatively cool, mostly constant moist site , plus some organic material on which to grow and your roof cannot provide that environment unless you go to a whole lot of trouble and expense. Second, even if you could get it to grow, it would form only a very thin layer that it would have no insulating effect, especially when it dried out, which would be most of the time.
