The files will compress. It's useful for email... but some files will not decrease in size much if the original file is already highly compressed. For instance, zipping up and MP3 won't do much to the file-size, but zipping up a WAV file will. Similarly, zipping divx videos won't reduce their size much, as that format is already compressed.
