Cognate to belie

Does the English language contain any word(s) cognate with belie.  I note the possibility of a change in the definition of cognate. To me, Milton's words: "New Presbyter is but old priest writ large!" best illustrate the meaning of the word cognate. Am I losing it?

Glad you asked!

Yes, "belie" survives in such derivatives as "liar", having the common root in Old English belien and earlier the AngloSaxon of leogan (to lie).  The noun form of "belie" is "belier".
