My explanation is that by now it is pretty clear that the whole world is going into some sort of a recession. In this state also countries like China that export to many countries around the world can expect their business to slow down a bit.

Less buying and more businesses closing or thinking very hard where they spend their money is something that will effect the Chinese economy in a negative way.

China and the rest of the world needs to preserve cash, or convert stocks to cash with credit squeeze. Thus the dramatic need to sell.

Plus herd mentality, if someone says "fire" in a building, do you wait around while everyone else is rushing to the door.

Third, yes, stock valuation will reflect the expected recession that has been coming, and will come sooner with credit crunch. Less Sales, less profits, lower stock values.
