Henry IV, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire at the end of the 11th century wanted to show he was more powerful than the church defied Pope Gregory VII by appointing the archbishops in his realm. The pope then excommunicated him and Henry feeling that he lost his power walked for three days barefoot in the snow to Canossa where the pope was residing and begged to be forgiven. The pope accepted and the excommunication was lifted.
