Could someone please explain to me what a 'monosaccharide' is ?

Carbohydrates, like tetroses, pentoses, and hexoses, that can't be broken down to simpler sugars by hydrolysis.
Monosaccharides are carbohydrates and monomers of polysaccharides. Monosaccharides are simplest carbohydrates.
