Allergic to Local Anesthetics

procainamide  I have had problems in the past with local anesthetics.  I feel I am allergic to them. I do not break out in hives or rashes but get this strange feeling that I cannot describe its almost like Im grasping to keep alive.  I would like to know the stats on people allergic to local anesthetics and what the symptoms are.  I have neglected to have dental work done due to this problem.  Now, I have some urgent work to be done and am facing it soon.  My dentist says he will use the kind without epinephrine.  I am literally scared out of my wits.  My dentist tells me it is very rare that people are allergic to this type drug.  I hope someone can help me with this problem.  I am also allergic to the yellow dye that is used at the Optomitrist's I dont know if this has the same basic ingredients as the local anesthetics.  I dont even know the name of this drug.

Thank you, Nancy

You need to find another dentist!!!  Epinephrine is something that naturally occurs in your body. It's not a completely foreign drug, just used in different ways and dosages. It's what you would take via injection to counteract a serious allergic reaction. I'm not a doctor, just an EMT, but I don't think you can be allergic to it. You CAN be allergic to some of the drugs they use for local anesthetics and you should see your family doctor about finding out which ones you are and aren't allergic to and what to do if one is used on you and you have an allergic reaction.  Until you find out, chew softly I guess....Good luck....
