APR increased due to late fees

Hi Dolans! For years I have managed to be responsible with the limited number of credit cards I've had. I'm currently holding two major ones and one store credit card which I don't use. I primarily use one card and occasionally the second. I pay them in full at the end of each month. I've run into a problem now however and I'm not sure what I can do about it. The second one, an AmEx card, was paid late by one day two months ago. I went away thinking my AmEx card had a zero balance only to find that I now have two months of $15 each in late fees, periodic finance charge due and received a letter today stating that effective 12/28/2009 a penalty APR or interest rate will be applied to my account. The penalty APR is equal to the Prime Rate + 23.99%, currently 27.24%. Do I have any chance of getting them to remove these late fees and keep my previous APR? I'm very concerned about how this is going to effect my credit rating. Any advice would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!! I need to contact them as soon as possible. Thank you!! Amy
